Review Title:

I was stabbed in the back by people who used to support me

Full Review of the Program:

If you wish to become an overworked TA, rather than have a sufficient amount of time devoted to your writing, then by all means, come here. U of I's MFA program is for teachers, not for writers.

The ONLY form of support is a TAship. I began the program with a full stipend and a TAship. I knew teaching would be no walk in the park, but I was not trained adequately by the Director of Writing. What was automatically assumed to be true, was that because my GPA was decent coming in from undergraduate work, and that my creative and critical sample were good, that MUST nessesarily translate into teaching. Swing and miss, on behalf of the department. I admit I was not good at teaching, but Idaho is so poorly funded, the only way funding is acquired is through TAships. But the worse part of it is, not that the funding system is atypical, many MFA programs can only fund with TAships, but that those without TAships are meant to feel as if they do not matter, as if they are not part of the program. I had so much trouble teaching, the program didn't renew mine. By that time, I was so stressed out by the IMMENSE load no one ever discusses, 2 very full classes one semester and 1 class the other. It wasn't an immense load for everyone for sure, but there were no alternatives, no parial TAships, no working with kids in schools or juvenile hall programs (as some TAships in MFA programs offer.) It was all the same kind of support, that if you cannot complete, then there is no alternative. Also, there are no grievences in which a person can appeal to. You either are a teacher or your not a poet. And of course I know a poet need not be a good teacher. I also know it isn't about the money, but Idaho's MFA program seems to want you to think so by only caring about fully-stipened grad students.

Advice to Prospective Students:

Avoid U of I's MFA program if you are serious about writing. Writing does not nesserily translate well into teaching. This program is essentially a training ground for teachers, not writers.

Sure a few people get great publications, but the only person I recall getting success aquired that sucess from being the child of a famous poet. More meritorious poets, (I am NOT including myself here, but every other person in the program) were not recognized simply because they were not already pre-entitled.

Overall Rating

1 Stars

Reputation Rating

3 Stars

Has a tier 1 ranking according to Seth Abramson's blog, but I want to make he knows the poor-funding may be unworthy of a #51 funding ranking.

Location

5 Stars

Beautiful place. Golden wheatfields and 4 seasons.

Quality of Faculty

2 Stars

When I first was accepted to the program, I not only contacted the program director, but the program coordinator, and the director wrote, "No need to shout, 'Here I am, look out for a talent like me'" or something to that affect, but I was simply contacting both because, I didn't know who to contact. This seemed to be a theme of the program director, who made up an imaginary argument that I was a diva asking for special treatment. I have never said that I deserved anything beyond merit. But I wanted to complain about the Teaching Situation, which needed critiquing, but I was presumed to be subversive and demanding, an argument which came out of nowhere.

Student Competitiveness
(5=most competitive)

4 Stars

To me this is a bad thing, this competitiveness because others are vicious about it.

Campus Facilities

1 Stars

Very poor health and testing services. Insurance was awful.

Financial Assistance

1 Stars

I've explained this thoroughly already.

Making Contacts

1 Stars

Amazingly, (and I mean amazingly genuinely) I was shunned after complaining about the program. Those little vipers stick together and are kind to one another, but not to anyone who has mental breakdowns, or anyone who says anything negative about the program. They, according to their logic, are infallible, whereas if I complain, I am commiting some sort of treason against the program and am acting like an entitled person.

Diversity

1 Stars

As white as a Klan rally. I'm from the South and I get the impression that no one in Moscow, Idaho has ever met a black or Hispanic person.

Career Services/Development

1 Stars

Not if you want to do something other than teach.

Dating Scene

1 Stars

Is this why I came to grad school?

LGBT Friendly

2 Stars

Moscow, Idaho may be a blue county in a very red state, but I've heard lots of the word "f***ot" thrown around.

Social Scene in General

2 Stars

Small town under 30,000 people, don't expect much.

Family Friendly

3 Stars

I don't know what "family friendly" means.

Cost of Living (5=most affordable)

4 Stars

Affordable compared to most places.

Dining Options

4 Stars

La Casa Lopez is a perfect Mexican restaraunt in Moscow. The food on campus is quite good.
