I am heading into my thesis semester in the Writing for Young People genre. I chose Murray State because it was the most affordable low-residency program around, especially when I learned that I would receive a regional discount because I lived in Indiana. Recently I moved to northern Virginia, and even without the regional discount it is still a great deal. Just compare the numbers and you will see what I mean.
But just because the program is affordable does NOT mean it is low-quality. Far from it! I am convinced that I could not be getting a better experience at the more expensive schools than I am here at Murray. The program is well-rounded and well thought out. Every semester it just keeps getting better, because the administration and the faculty are truly dedicated to making each residency a stellar experience. They openly ask for feedback and do their best to put suggestions into practice whenever they can. The faculty mentors are truly professionals who are sincerely interested in helping you become a better writer. And because of the hard work of the administration throughout the year, you will have the opportunity to learn from, meet in person, and establish connections with contemporary, living and breathing writers who are out there NOW making names for themselves in their fields. Each residency I attend is an amazing opportunity to grow as a writer, and I would highly recommend the program to anyone serious about their writing.
Advice to Prospective Students:
Do your research and compare the numbers. Investigate the staff, faculty mentors, and visiting writers. This is not an easy ride; you will have to work, and you will have to spend a couple of weeks once or twice a year on campus during the residencies, so plan to arrange your life accordingly. Find the program that best suits your needs and your situation. But I am 100% certain that you will not find a program with such high quality for such an excellent price as the one at Murray State.
